Landing a job in marketing at a small company will give you the opportunity to use all the skills that you have in your bag of tricks. A smaller company will tend to not have a separate art department, or a photo processing department, nor a copy writing department. Most everyone will be wearing multiple hats and instead of meeting with all the different department heads to pool you disciplines into a project, you’ll meet with with other project managers to share resources and best practices as you will all be doing the same types of labors to produce and promote your individual campaigns.

Of course as you economies of scale grow, some of the laborious busy work will have to be delegated to separate full time departments and therein lies your chance to specialize in your favorite field in a department that you designed or move into your self- created marketing manager jobs.

In the meantime it would be fun to take care of all your own brochures, d.m., events, e-marketing, print, PR, etc. If the company doesn’t take off in a reasonable amount of time, then consider it as a proving ground for your consolidated talents when you open your own consumer marketing business. And should it succeed and become a premiere marketing force in its niche then you’re in line for the next promotion into the ivory tower from your entry level marketing jobs.
